Ken says that the best part of being an
artist is that he is his own boss. If someone calls and wants to
go fishing, he can stop painting and go. This does not mean that
Ken is not working even while he is fishing. He is always observing the
world around him. Ken is self taught. He was influenced by
early Indiana artists.
Autumn on McCormick's Creek by Ken Bucklew |
| Ken paints wildlife in natural
landscapes. His work has ranked in the top ten for the Federal Duck Stamp
Program, the Indiana Duck Stamp Competition, Indiana Game Bird Stamp
Competition, and Indiana Department of Natural Resources Calendar.
Ken's paintings have been chosen for 10 Game Bird Stamps, 5 Duck Stamps
and 3 times for Ducks Unlimited. The competition for the Indiana Game
Bird and Duck stamps was open to all artists. Ken feels that he
won often because his paintings were of birds in their natural Indiana
surroundings. When Ken sells a print of one of his duck or game
bird paintings Ken places a matching stamp in one corner and a remarque sketch of the bird in a different
position in the other corner of the mat. This makes his prints
unique. Example of remark put on a print by Ken Bucklew |

Ken is very careful to get the details
of a duck or game bird correct. He visits a friend who is a
taxidermist and is able to photograph a specimen from different angles
to get realistic color and shape. He then has his friend critique
the work. Ken says that if the animal in his painting can pass the
scrutiny of the taxidermist, then it is ready for the judges.
