In 1990 Jim and fellow painter, David
Dale, had the idea of painting along the entire length of the Wabash
River. Although they completed several paintings at that time, the
project was more than could be fit into their busy schedules.
Nearly 12 years later Jim and David were able to complete their dream. The
result is "River Odyssey: Two Artists Follow the Wabash," a series of 65
exhibition-sized paintings in hand decorated frames as well as sketches
and notes from their travels. This series of paintings was shown at the
Indiana State Museum In 2006, and will be exhibited at seven other
galleries along the Wabash River before being auctioned in
August of 2007. Canadian Geese - Sketch for River Odyssey: Two Artists Follow the Wabash |
| Jim and his wife, Eleanor presently live
on the farm where Eleanor grew up. They purchased the "homeplace"
from Eleanor's mother in 1968.
Jim reinforced the sagging barn and built a kennel for Eleanor so she
could pursue her love, interest and expertise in training and caring for
dogs. Once the kennel was up and running, Jim was able to leave
his teaching position at Ball State and devote all of his time and
energy to painting and sculpture. He later
renovated their 1865 farmhouse, adding a new kitchen, a bedroom and
bath, living room and sunroom. Jim even laid the brick for a wall
and fireplace. Homeplace - 17x38 - Watercolor |

Animals have played a huge part in the
lives of Jim and Eleanor. Since 1965 they have bred and raised
Bouvier des Flandres. These large black dogs, originally from
Flanders in Belgium, make excellent guard dogs without being vicious.
Eleanor was a dog trainer for 18 years, while boarding dogs in their
kennels for 30 years. Although they still do some long term
boarding, Jim and Eleanor are down to only four dogs of their own.
They also have longhorn cattle, raised as pets, not for food.
