Thelma grew up on a farm in Hebron,
Indiana. Her family raised crops, chickens and milk cows on about 100
acres. She said it was probably the best place to be during the
depression as there was always food and milk. Thelma remembered a
time when someone carried away a milk can from in front of the barn.
It was found later down near the creek...it had been full of whitewash.
This rural upbringing gave Thelma a love of and respect for nature.
This comes out in much of her artwork. Thelma feels, "The world
has enough problems. I think art should be beautiful and pleasing
to the eye, to give you a feeling of quiet and goodness."

helping with the children's show called "Art Is." This
hands on program
runs during February and March and highlights art from a different

Thelma has been teaching art to Japanese
students a few months a year for 10 to 15 years. This began with
the children of men sent the United States to supervise manufacturing
plants. Soon the wives wanted to be involved as well. Thelma
has become good friends with most of her students and keeps in touch
even after they return to Japan. Although Thelma has traveled to
England, Oberammergau, and various parts of the United States (even
ferrying from Alaska,) at this writing, she has never had the
opportunity to visit Japan. Gift given to Thelma Frame by one of her students. |
