Ruth and Jerry Howell were married for
41 years. They raised a daughter , Deanna and a son, Jeremy.
Ruth says that Jerry was very supportive of her artistic endeavors but
had definite preferences. While Ruth is drawn to the deep, rich
color and design of abstracts, Jerry preferred her more realistic works,
so Ruth painted both. She remembers bringing home a workshop piece
after a class with Jerry Smith. Her husband saw the painting
and said, "Let's keep this one." Family Photographs |
| Ruth has always been interested in art.
Her creative instinct has led her to counted cross stitch, designing and
stitching trapunto and painting ceramic and porcelain dolls and making
their bodies and clothes. As a birthday present, Ruth's sister
signed them both up for a "Bob Ross Painting Class" at a local art and
craft store. The instructor told Ruth that if she wasn't painting,
she should be. This inspired Ruth to stop by the Southside Art League and sign
up for watercolor classes. Trapunto work designed and stitched by Ruth Howell |

When Ruth isn't painting or doing
needlework, she might be teaching tricks to her puppy, Henry.
Henry is still young and playful, but he is an eager learner, especially
when an accomplishment is rewarded with praise, a pat on the head and a
treat. Ruth hopes, once Henry settles down a bit, to take him to
brighten the day of residents of a nursing home or hospice.
