Ruth has a large collection of
ceramic and wooden chickens. There are even roosters on her
tablecloth, curtains and throw rugs in the kitchen. Ruth says that
she had to tell family and friends, "No more roosters!!" as she was
running out of room to display the colorful pieces.

| For a while Ruth made ceramic animal
dolls. She would paint the heads and paws and stitch and stuff the
clothes to coordinate. Once she even tried her hand at making a
porcelain doll. Ruth wasn't quite happy with the face so she
enlarged the eyes. The instructor was taken aback, that on her
first piece, Ruth was changing the face. The finished doll won a
ribbon at the Indiana State Fair.

Ruth enjoys painting an occasional
landscape or animal picture, but prefers playing with the color and
design of an abstract work. Many of her paintings are done on
gesso coated board, rather than watercolor paper, because the paint does
not soak in and the colors remain rich and brilliant. Ruth admits that the
hardest part of an abstract is to know when to stop and not overwork the
piece. One of Ruth's paintings was not pleasing her, so she chose
the areas that she did like and drew circles and geometric shapes around
and between those spaces. Ruth then painted the background so that
the pleasing areas were featured.
