Joel was born at home in a little house overlooking Deep River in East Gary, Indiana. His grandparents immigrated from Austria and Russia. He was always drawing and working with his hands. As a child going to church, he was always delighted when the church bulletin had a blank space so he could draw for an hour. Joel played football in high school and college. He received his B.S. degree from Valparaiso University and his DDS from Indiana University. Joel was in the U. S. Army Dental Corp, spending some time in Viet Nam.

Joel was a practicing dentist for 38 years. He turned over his practice to son, Tom, in 2003. This provided Joel with more time to devote to traveling, painting, and teaching.

Joel and Karen love to travel, painting the memories as they travel around the United States and beyond. They have taken painting expeditions to every state in the United States, as well as France, Switzerland, Austria, Hungry, Italy, England, Germany, Mexico, Canada and the Caribbean. They have a small camper in which they travel and camp. Joel paints and Karen is the navigator and does computer work and photography. They enjoy visiting with their children, Jennifer, Tim and Tom and their families.
