Joel and his wife Karen live in a lovely valley on Bugg Hollow in Gallatin, Tennessee.  Joel has his studio there and conducts classes for aspiring artists.  He is usually up at 5 AM and paints until 10 in his studio and again in the evening.  During the day he likes to go out plein air painting.  Joel says," I just cannot stop painting. I love it."

Joel took some art courses, but developed most of his skills from instructors he admired.  He is a painter in motion, restless to capture nature in all moods and seasons.  He is a devoted plein air painter who feels that the essence of the place may only be captured by the artist experiencing it directly.  He enjoys painting outdoors with "the wind in your face, flies in your paint and two hours to create a painting."  He is a member of the Bugg Hollow Plein Air Painters, Indiana Plein Air Painters, Laguna Plein Air Painters, Society for the Advancement of Plein Air Painting and Southern Light Artists of America.  He has also had his work published in Southwest Art Magazine and Plein Air Magazine.
