Items of Interest about Caroline Mecklin

Caroline teaches painting in her studio in the Stutz building in downtown Indianapolis.  She says she makes a living as a teacher so that she can be an artist.  Caroline has been teaching, on and off, since she was a junior at Macalester College in Minnesota.  When a graduate position was eliminated, the art department needed another teacher and decided an undergraduate could handle the job.  Caroline was chosen.  After graduation she taught high school art for 4 years, before taking some time off to update her portfolio and research graduate schools.  Caroline earned her Master of Fine Art from University of Nebraska.   Since moving to Indianapolis she has taught at the Indianapolis Art Center and John Herron School of Art.

Caroline creates life paintings.  She compares this art to improvisational jazz, saying it is the essence of the creative impulse.  Caroline enjoys exploring the boundaries between reality and abstraction.  She has a number of abstracts that she has painted when the mood was right.  She may use these as backgrounds for drawing in ink and pastel.

Abstract backgrounds and an example of their use

Caroline does large scale paintings.  She recently received an Individual Artist Grant from the Indiana Arts Commission for canvas, stretchers, paint and gesso for these larger than life creations.  So far, Caroline has limited these paintings to 48" by 69" so that she can transport them in her vehicle.
