When Alan was 6 years old his mother
thought that he should learn to play the piano. His piano lessons were
across the hall from artist, Roland Osborn's studio. Alan could smell the oil
paint and wanted very much to learn to paint. His mother
compromised and he took both piano lessons and art classes. He
feels fortunate to have been able to acquire a Chickering Baby Grand Piano and still
enjoys playing.

| Alan was one of the founders of the
Bethel Pike Pottery. Alan, David Cayton and John Peterson began
their studio in the basement of a house just south of Bethel Pike.
The studio was later moved to an area north of Muncie, near Albany.
Alan was a potter and ceramicist for 40 years,
but recently dismantled his kiln so that he could devote more time to
his painting.

When Allen is not in his studio or at
his piano, he may be found in the greenhouse attached to the back of the
home that he shares with his wife, Cindy and their two poodles. One of Alan's hobbies is growing
phalaenopsis orchids. Phalaenopsis means "moth-like" and in their native Philippines, these
orchids are thought to resemble groups of moths. Alan enjoys the
many variations and beautiful colors of these long lasting flowers.
