Karen's father, Bill Schmitt, was an
artist and drew patriotic cartoons during World War II. He introduced
Karen to the arts, but it was a visit to the St. Louis Museum of Art to
view an exhibit of
Van Gogh paintings which resulted in her decision to study art. Karen's
use of vibrant color may be credited to many artists, including Van Gogh,
Bonnard, Wolf Kahn and Rockwell Kent. Karen traveled to Soho in
New York City during the 70's and 80's and was also influenced by
numerous contemporary art exhibits she saw there and at the Museum of
Modern Art. Although Karen selected
printmaking as her focus in college, she admits that painting was her
first love.
