Nhat and her husband, Andre enjoy
traveling. Nhat uses the trips to visit art museums or other
artists. One such trip was to meet Clifton Monteith. Clifton creates woodcraft with
urushi lacquering. He studied the urushi technique for many years
in Japan (even though he does not speak Japanese.) Nhat sent a letter of introduction
to Clifton, along with photographs
of her urushi work. Nhat and Andre were honored to receive
an invitation to spend a weekend at Clifton's renovated farmhouse and
studio in upper Michigan. A friendship developed, and they were pleased to find
someone else who could discuss the art of urushi with passion. Nhat and Clifton photographed in the mountains of Kyoto, Japan |
| Nhat has the distinction of being
commissioned to create a large urushi lacquer mural to be displayed at
the new Indianapolis Airport. The mural will be composed of 29 panels of
urushi art and will be completed in the fall of 2008. Each side of
the 29 pieces must be primed with 10 coats of lacquer before the urushi
painting may begin. Nhat is developing a chart to keep track of
the 580 steps in the priming process.

Nhat has used the art of urushi on her
sculptures. Each surface of the sculpture must have the same
attention to detail as in her flat works of art. Nhat has been featured in articles in
American Craft Magazine and Art News Magazine. She was also one of the artists chosen to
be in Whispers to Shouts-Indiana Women Who Create Art, an exhibit at the
Indiana State Museum during the spring of 2005. In 2006, one of
Nhat's sculptures was displayed in Cincinnati at a special invitational
coordinated with an International Sculpture Conference, and others were
exhibited at in Austin, Texas.
