More Items of Interest about Alice Usher

Alice is left handed and remembers feeling that everything was geared to being right handed.  Because of this she didn't take up oil painting until she was 60 years old.  She has one series of paintings called flash photo.  They were inspired by photographs and stories in the newspaper.  Two of the most striking pieces are called Bread and Water.  Bread shows people in Sarajevo reaching for bread.  Water is based on the plight of residents of Mexico after an earthquake.

Vera Da Silva was an artist who lived in France and painted studies of houses and birds, until the day that she discovered a small spider weaving its web across one of her paintings.  After that, Da Silva often painted spider webs in her works.  Alice read a biography of Da Silva and began to study spiders and their webs.  She has created a number of paintings based on spider webs.  Alice even named one of her pieces, An Homage to Da Silva.  The work is an ink wash and pastel which includes houses, birds and spider webs.

Alice is proud of her four children and five grandchildren.  She and Roland Usher moved to Indianapolis when Roland accepted a teaching position at Butler University.  The studio attached to their house afforded Alice time to pursue her art and be available when the children arrived home from school.  Although much of the family is no longer in Indianapolis, Alice stays in touch through letters, phone calls and e-mail.
