Russ has always enjoyed painting. He says he first began taking art lessons at a studio in Sheridan in about the fifth grade. Russ has a degree in art education from Ball State University but has never taught. He owned and operated a production art studio from 1985 to 1993 and from 2001 to 2004 and was an art director and studio manager for two different multiple original art studios from 1993 until 2001. Russ is now a stay at home dad and paints in the studio in his restored Victorian home. Russ and his wife, Debra have three children, Aaron, Noah and Maya. The family occasionally joins relatives at Virginia Beach , where the entire group rents a house by the ocean. It was one of those trips that inspired Russ to capture his three children on canvas.

Russ and his family share their home with three dogs and four cats. Russ' passion is raising Boxers. He was happy to introduce Sophie, Jack and Lola. Sophie is the matriarch of the group. Jack is Sophie's son and Lola is Jack's intended. Russ also enjoys gardening, cooking and woodworking, when time permits.

Russ is a member of Group 6, a group of six artists from the Noblesville area. It is not unusual for artists to meet and paint together, but Group 6 goes a step further. Each artist works on one sixth of a single painting. They agree upon a subject, size and concept of painting and then each artist paints a section in his or her own unique style. Sometimes a painting is made up of six canvases mounted together. Other paintings are on a single canvas divided into six sections. A finished painting contains the personality of each artist.
